week 6 - Requirements

The requirements that I will need for the location folio include location how much it will cost, access to equipment and time that will be needed to plan for. Most of my shots will be taken down the coast for the location component, as the family has a house down there it will not cost me anything in accommodation but it will have to pay for petrol to get there and back and food (About $60 petrol + $30 food weekend). The house is down the south coast about 10minutes outside a little town, bermagui. Bermagui is situated about 30mins from Narooma and about an hour to Bega. When driving from Canberra it takes (depening on traffic, weather and time of day) a little over three hours. The access to the for the location shots are easy because its just on a beach. The locations that I have been looking into for my architectural are places that look grungy and run down. I have found some building that may be appropriate, the building that I found were in Cooma and Goulburn. The buildings in Cooma were in the industrial area the best way to describe them would be big barns. When we were driving through Goulburn saw a building that was a wool shed, it was really run down. When I was first looking a friend showed me a photo that she took in Sydney of the old tram station it was all covered in graffiti, it looked like the perfect location but the building was not tall enough.

week 5 - Techniques/Equipment

The Techniques and Equipment that I will use to complete this folio will be a 50D 24-70 L, 100mm macro L, a younguo flash and a tripod.

The equipment that I will have to borrow is underwater case from a friend. I have used the case before I found that there were a few downsides to this underwater case which included the use of controls we the camera is in the plastic, is hard to change the aperture. Another draw back that I found when using my 24-70mm lens is that itcan only get about 50mm because it was stopped by the case, the 24-70 gets longer as it gets wider.

I can fix the problem with lens by using the 10-22mm that CIT has on offer. Other equipment that would be useful for the shot list that I could also borrow from CIT would be a panoramic tripod and a tilt shift lens that would be used with the architectural shot.

The Techniques that would be used would take a lot of shots down at and in the beach because of the beach nature of the brand. So when shooting in the water I need to consider the temperature, swell and time of day. The temperature of the water is important because it will determine whether or not a wetsuit need to be used. Depending on the swell at the time will help make a decision on flippers. The last decision that has to be made is the time of day that I will shoot at the different times of the day will give the photo a completely different look.

ideas

For my landscape photo that has to be taken I thought I would have the photo taken in the ocean because my brand is Rip Curl. The original idea for the photo was to have a surfer off in the distance but able to see the surfers legs under the board but still able to see him on top of the board as well.

I wanted the shot to be similar to this one but with the surfer back and getting in more of the landscape in the shot, the difficulties that I had with shot was that the water was to dark. So these shots that I did to try and over come this problem.

The ideas that I have for my architecture shot is to shoot it with really grunge buildings because it is a youth brand and instead of being the head office it will hopefully look like a place where am ad would be shot.

week 4 - Target audience

The target audience for Rip Curl is the youth market. The way Rip Curl attracts the youth is by the ads and slogans they have. The most recent slogan that is used by Rip Curl Is “live the search”, what I get from this is that rip curl is encouraging to take that next step and find the best waves and not wait to be told where they are. The people in the ads are always young either modeling or doing a sport that most young people think is "cool", because from surfing to snowboarding, skateboarding and wake boarding these are all sponsored by Rip Curl. My photos will hopefully help attract the youth market because I going to take photos that represent the youth. For my architectural I am going to take a photo of a grunge building, instead of being a place where the head office will be it would more likely be a place where an ad campaign would be shot. My idea for a landscape is to have an underwater case in the ocean and a lone surfer off the side of the image. The idea that I have for my Marco shot is to take a photo of a towel so the fibers can be seen very clearly and in the fibres will have sand in there. The reason for this shot is because not everyone that goes to the beach takes a surfboard, but 95% take a towel and it always gets covered in sand.

week 3 - Past and current ad campaigns

From the first ad campaign by Barrie Sutherl taken a Bells Beach and used by Rip Curl in a full-page spread of Surfing World Magazine. The same basic principles have been used through out to the preset day. Even though the technology has changed a great deal since the early seventies when the first ad photo was taken for Rip Curl .The similarities between the ads from the past and the current ads are they both use young people doing what they love and having fun, ether this is getting lots of air whist snowboarding riding a long barrel while surfing or just ready to have a night out on the town. In all Rip Curl images this moment is captured perfectly. The current ad campaign is "LIVE THE SEARCH". Rip Curl ads combined modern photographic techniques and other techniques that make the image more dated like the use of collages. There are many examples of this style used to great effect across the different sports that are sponsors by Rip Curl. The collage effect is used by Rip Curl to advise the athlete but it is also used on T-shirts, swimmers and advertisement for Rip Curl. The clip at the very bottom also highlights how techniques are used to make the clips look older than it is, this is because how it is shot the fonts that are used and at 24sec it is made to look like it is being shot on film.

Some modern Rip Curl photographers include Dean Tirkot, Ryan WillMott, (from clip in order of appearance Sean Davey,Andrew “Shorty” Buckley and Jon Frank) .

week 2 - histroy of client (rip curl)

Doug Warbrick and Brian Singer started up rip Curl in 1969 in the small Victorian town of Torquay. Rip Curl was originally

started to shape boards because this was about the time when the surfboard revolution and the time of the

development of the short board. Although they

first started making boards in about 1970 they branched out and started making wetsuits (the reason rip curl began making wetsuits was because they were down in Victoria and needed something for surfers to keep them warm but wasn’t as heavy as what was already on the market) designed towards surfers. Now Rip Curl sell a wide

rage of products from the products that would be no surprise surfboards, wetsuits, clothes and even things such as watches

and snow gear. But then there are other Rip Curl product that are not as expected these include a cars, a ford and renault have some cars that has a Rip Curl symbol on the

side .Rip Curl now operates internationally from United Kingdom, New Zealand, Europe, USA, Canada, Peru and Israel.

The first photo taken for Rip Curl as an ad campaign was taken by a photographer by the name

of Barrie Sutherland. Barrie would paddle out on his big Mal surfboard with this camera as well,

when he took the shoot it was ea

rly in the morning he was not in the water but the slogan that

went with the image was “The Dawning of Rip Curl Surfboards”
